Reused and Reformed

The recycling of a single musical phrase could be dull and repetitive. However, warping, chopping and then layering can transform the output into a deep, meditative spacious tapestry that can run for long periods of time before repeating. This is not a new concept but is instead recycled from the phase music of the likes of Steve Reich et al. For this piece, a sequence of notes was copied across all channels on a sequencer (Winter Modular Eloquencer – 8 channels of CV and Gate/Trigger). Various control parameters such as clock division/multiplication and track length etc. were varied and used to sequence 7 synth voices. This piece was performed live on a eurorack modular synth system recorded into Ableton, with only minimal post-performance mix/mastering.
Fraser Rowan is a Glasgow based producer performing, writing and recording music under the name Ty Lumnus. For many years his instrument of choice was guitar, working in collaboration with other musicians. After a short time working with an electronic artist his eyes were opened to a new way of creating music which enabled an artist to write, record and perform music without the requirement of other musicians. At this stage he adopted Ableton and a laptop into his workflow and found that his output rapidly accelerated. Always preferring to work out of the box, Fraser had collected a number of hardware synths, however they never felt like the natural instrument of choice. After feeling more of an affinity towards the flexibility of semi modular synths, Fraser took the plunge into a fully modular system that he has been building for >6 years. A prolific producer, every week sees the release of a new live modular jam performance on his YouTube channel.

In addition to his solo Ty Lumnus project Fraser also runs Attack Release – a free monthly live experimental electronic club night in Bloc, Glasgow showcasing 3 different artists each month.
